
Cathy Tsang
Cathy Tsang is a recent graduate with her Orchestral Performance Diploma and Master of Orchestral Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, both with scholarships. She studied flute with Matthew Featherstone, John Hall, Jonathan Burgess and Sarah Newbold; piccolo with Lindsey Ellis; baroque flute with Katy Bircher. She attained her Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020, under the tutelage of Ms. Chuang Suet Wah Ivy and Mr. Brian Chan.
As an active chamber and orchestral player, she is recently working with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Welsh National Opera, the Orchestra de Cymru, Ensemble Cambrica and Cardiff Opera. She also performed in opera projects with the Royal Welsh Orchestra, playing the ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’ and the ‘Dialogues des Carmélites’. She has worked with the Royal Welsh Symphony Orchestra, City of Newport Symphony Orchestra, Guildford Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Orchestra, Ponte Orchestra, Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong and so on, of which she is also the principal flute in some of them. In 2022, she participated in the Vienna Masterclass 2022 with Ms Barbara Haase, and performed at the Bank Austria Salon im Alten Rathaus in Vienna; the Verão Clássico 2022 with Ms Silvia Careddu and gave her solo performance at the Picadeiro Real de Belém, Museu Nacional dos Coches in Portugal. Having a woodwind quintet ensemble group, they have recently investigated various repertoires. Moreover, a flute quartet, Fuloo Fuloo Flute Quartet, held their debut concert in collaboration with the French May in 2021.
As a passionate learner, Cathy has performed in different masterclasses and was coached by Sebastian Jacot, Silvia Careddu, Emily Beynon, Marie Zupancic, Barbara Haase, and so on. She participated in international flute conventions and festivals in the UK, Portugal, Vienna and Singapore with fruitful experiences and rewards.
In recent years, she has been awarded prizes in various music competitions. She performed at the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York (2019), after being presented the first prize in the Golden Classical Music Awards. She is also the winner of the New Talent Festival 2022 under the professional group of Woodwind and Brass Category Age Group, the finalist of the British Flute Competition 2022, as well as the Parsons Music Scholarship for Wind, Brass and Percussion Instrument. She is also the winner of the Excellence International Music Open Competition in 2019. She also won in the Nouvelle Etoile Competition 6th edition.
In recognition of her excellence in academic and music achievements during her studies, Cathy has been awarded the Help Musician Postgraduate Award, The Craxton Memorial Trust, the Outstanding Award of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers 2017, and Talent Development Scholarship 2020.
